I ran, swapping to all fours to move faster, using my nails to dig into the dirt. My eyes were wide and my perfect hearing could hear the shouts of the mob. They all hated me, wanted me dead. It wasn't my fault I was part animal. Dog to be exact. I had ears that stuck up when worried, yet could flop down when completely relaxed. I also had a tail that resembled one of a wolf's.

"Get Her! She's heading toward the river!"

I heard their shouts and knew I only had one choice. I jumped into the river, even with it's waters roaring and tried to stay floating. I was beat against a few different rocks, some sharp and slightly cutting my arms, torso, and legs.

"Ahhh, just leave her. She'll be dead by the time she reaches the end of the stream." One man said.

With a few grunts of approval the mob died down and went back to the city. I finally got stuck, back pressed against a rock. The harsh waters pressed against my chest making it hard to breath and I could already see a cast of shadows clouding my vision.

That's when I heard a few dogs barking in the distance.....three of them maybe?

"Aster, Blackie, Berlitz!" A voice boomed, giving me a shudder at it's harshness.

I looked up and over at the bank to see three dogs, just as I had assumed. They were large and a man came running up just a few moments after they arrived. To my surprise one of the dogs jumped into the water and swam to me, but the man grabbed him by the scruff, eyes now filled with worry. He spotted me and looked shocked at first. Guess he'd never seen a half-breed human before.

He ordered his dogs to stay and made his way over to me along the bank, dodging rocks and avoiding getting splashed. Some of the water splashed in my face, suffocating me for a few seconds. How could the stream be any stronger than it already was?! Another wave took me under completely, even separating me from the rock. I thought for sure I would be dead due to thrashing or lack of oxygen, but someone caught my hood.

I was pulled out of the river, coughing up water. My vision almost completely taken over with pitch black. I had just enough time to look up into the eyes of the man with the three dogs. They were a crystal blue that was so calming. My eyes fluttered shut and I passed out breathing heavily, feeling a cloth cover me.

I woke up, and gasped, realizing I could breath properly and I wasn't drowning. How was I not dead?

I looked around at my unfamiliar surroundings, until my eyes came to a desk. A man with slicked back blonde hair sat there, and tilted his head up to look at me. His sky-hued eyes shown underneath the thin layers of glass on his glasses. My memories flooded back to me and my eyes went wide. He had saved me.

"Oh, You're awake." He said, shuffling some of the papers on his desk, and setting them aside.

I nodded in response. My mouth refused to say any of the things I wished for it to. I just sat there looking like an idiot. Although he had saved me, I still feared him simply by his stature and build.

"You're not human are you?" He asked, standing and walking over to the bed I was in. I sat up and shook my head, determining if I should speak or not.

I did, "No, I'm part dog. Maybe wolf slightly. There aren't many of us, but whenever one is born they are destined to be killed. Though slaughtered is a more proper term for it." I looked down to realize I was now in an over-sized shirt and shorts. Had he given these to me? Had he dressed me?

His eyes went wide with wonder. "Interesting...may I?" He asked, hovering a hand over the ears on my head.

I nodded. He didn't seem like he wanted to hurt me at all...right?

He his lowered and began to pet me behind my ears. He seemed to know dogs all to well when he hit a spot on my ear that made my ears fly up then go down slowly and I closed my eyes.

"And...your tail?" He asked curiously.

I flicked it up at him granting permission to investigate it. He stroked it lightly as I sat in slight discomfort at the now awkward situation.

"So you have three dogs?" I asked quickly.

He nodded. "Want to see them?"

I nodded and hopped up, shivering at the cold wooden floor on my bare feet, then following him through the house to his back door. He opened it and stepped out with me on his heels, until I was attacked by the dogs - in a playful manner. I instantly started laughing and pawed back at them.

"Aster, Blackie, and Berlitz...right?" I asked, standing back up then crouching to pet them.

He gave a curt nod as I looked around the yard, spotting a frisbee.

"Mine!" I yelled, running down and skidding across the dirt, creating a cloud as I picked it up. I threw it and watched the dogs chase after it. "I like them." I said walking back over to him, watching them fight over the frisbee. My lips turned up in a smile and I felt so relaxed, I would never have to worry again--

Three sharp knocks and one kick. My head swung around and I ran back into the house, his front door was basically being beaten down. My eyes went wide once more and I backed up, knocking into him.

"Stay here." He said, going to open the door. He opened it to the same mob I had seen yesterday, I quickly ducked behind the corner of the kitchen.

"All right, Beilschmidt. Have you seen any half-breeds? A body is missing." One of the townsmen growled.

'Beilschmidt?' I wondered.

"I have not." He said firmly.

"Then you won't mind us investigating your home." The townsmen questioned back.

"You have no right." He snapped.

"Oh, do we?" I heard the click of a rifle being prepared to fire. He had saved my life...I couldn't let his be taken away.

"I'm here!" I said, turning around the corner.

"I knew it." The townsmen pushed past him and grabbed my ear. I squeaked in pain and lashed at him with a growl in my throat.

"She is mine." Ludwig said firmly, pulling me out of his grip and putting my behind him.

"You own her, Ludwig?" The townsmen questioned.

'Ludwig?? His name?' I questioned myself.

Ludwig nodded, I peered around him, giving a nod myself for my safety.

"I accidentally wondered out." I said quickly.

"I don't believe you have the right to take other's property." Ludwig snapped.

"You let her into the city! We have the right!" The townsmen argued back.

"You're done hear." Ludwig growled, getting close to the man's face. A clear threat.

"We'll be back Beilschmidt." He snapped back, yet accepted defeat.

Looking disappointed and furious the townsmen turned to leave. The mob grunting in anger and slamming the door on their way out. I gave a sigh of relief.

"Thank you. So much." I said.

He only shrugged.

"So, Ludwig is your name?" I asked.

He nodded. "And your's?"

"________." I replied. "I guess I'm still in your debt, huh?"

He chuckled lightly which made me smile.

"And how can I repay you?" I asked jokingly.

I swear a smirk spread across his face and he raised one eyebrow. "Well you could--"

"HEY WEST! There was this mob and-- WHO IS THAT?!" An albino asked coming in the front door, spotting me with wide eyes.

Ludwig put his face in his palm and I chuckled at the albino's enthusiasm. Living here wasn't going to be bad at all.
